Actos & Bladder Cancer
Actos has been pulled from the shelves in France and Germany. Why? Because Actos & bladder cancer have been found to be linked, according to an ongoing study. The FDA is reviewing the study and others and in the meantime has issued a warning to be printed on Actos labels.
One study, conducted in France, found that the longer the drug was taken past one year, the higher the risk for bladder cancer. France immediately pulled the diabetes drug off the shelves upon publication of this information.
The FDA reports that after one year of taking Actos (pioglatizone) for diabetes, the risk for bladder cancer rose by as much as 40%. As of June 2011 the agency is warning doctors not to prescribe Actos for patients with bladder cancer or those who have had it in the past. If you are taking Actos and you have or have had bladder cancer, talk to your doctor immediately about your options.
